I bought "Black and Blues" after I saw Iyeoka perform in Providence at the Black Repertory Theater on July 18, 2005. First, I must say that Iyeoka's performance was the first one I saw that meshed spoken word with vocals. When she began her performance I was hooked on her deep voice which sings like chocolate crystal, and I was hit by the power of her words. So I bought this CD hoping to capture that same experience, and I'm not disappointed.
Never before had I heard a piece such as "She Does Not Know Her Beauty" in which the artist goes back to her origins by speaking in the accent of her homeland. You are about to hear the work of an artist whose creativity knows no bounds. Your mind will be transformed by Iyeoka's messages as well as by the diverse ways in which she chooses to deliver them - whether with musical accompaniment or in her solo voice. At no time do the music or her voice overpower each other, so you can be assured that the notes you hear will sound aesthetically pleasing. Her album- with its jazzy/blues/R&B tunes- takes spoken word to another level. So if you're looking for a unique sound, this is it.
Iyeoka, I wish you much love and success and I ain't afraid to say it!

The first time I saw Iyeoka perform was at the Black Rhino in Boston. I was attending a fund raiser and was blown away by her presence and her demand for attention. She sang a song called "REVOLUTION" and I actually wanted to participate with her in the movement of the song. "SHE DOESN'T KNOW HER BEAUTY" reminded me of my mother and right then and there I wanted to know more about Iyeoka.
"Black and Blues" isn't just another album, it's a life altering want for change. At least for me anyway. She pours her heart like none I have known before. Each song, each poem delves deeper into her mind on life, love and for the better of humanity. She teaches you of her ancestors and not to be ashamed of who you are. I admire this woman and everything that she does. GO OUT AND GET THIS ALBUM!! It's worth it.
I've had the pleasure of hearing and seeing Iyoeka on numerous occasions first when she was an active member of Blackout Arts Collective and more recently at the Lizard Lounge. Iyoeka is a powerful poet. When you hear Iyoeka's pieces whether its live, on video or on a CD be prepared for moving, riveting, entertaining fusion of spoken word, song, jazz, R&B to put it more appropriately SISTA GOT FLAVA!!!
there are cd's and then there are clasics this work is a clasic iyeoka mixes a soulful motown/jazzy voice with spoken word and i never thought that was possible but she's pulled it off and not only has she pulled it off but she's put together a classic it's often if you see a person live the music is different from the cd well not in this case her performances are as flawless as her cd so for those of you who haven't seen iyeoka live your missing something special, now as a record label owner i often like to compare an artist to another artist to give the reader an idea of what there listening to but iyeoka has created i new genre of music so i cant compare it other than to say flawless
